Dr Hopwood did his medical training in Australia, graduating in 1978.
After completion of studies in Australia, he worked overseas for two years in Great Britain and for five years in a Christian hospital in Benin Republic in western part of Africa.
After returning to Australia, he has worked mostly in rural and remote areas for 28 years.
He is married, and he and his wife are blessed with five children and 14 grandchildren.
