Skin cancer checks and treatment
Skin cancers are the most common cancers in Australia. The most frequently diagnosed types are:
-
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
-
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
-
Melanoma – a more dangerous form of skin cancer
More than 13,000 Australians are diagnosed with melanoma each year. It’s especially common between the ages of 15 and 45, and by age 85, 1 in 13 men and 1 in 22 women will have been diagnosed with the disease.
It’s recommended that everyone over the age of 15 have a skin check at least once. You may need more frequent checks if you have:
-
A personal or family history of melanoma
-
High sun exposure, sunburn or outdoor occupations
-
A weakened immune system or history of chemotherapy
-
A large number of moles (200+) or dysplastic naevus syndrome
-
Previous use of solariums
A skin check is a comprehensive, head-to-toe examination using a dermatoscope (a magnifying device) and DermEngine software for digital imaging and monitoring. Your doctor will:
-
Carefully examine any moles, spots or skin lesions
-
Discuss any findings and advise on next steps
-
Take photographs to help track changes over time
You will be asked to undress to your underwear for the examination. Female patients may wear a bra if there are no moles in the breast area. A modesty sheet can be provided, and a chaperone is available upon request.
If you prefer, we can examine only specific areas — though a full-body check is strongly recommended to avoid missing potentially harmful lesions elsewhere.
Depending on your skin check results, your doctor may recommend:
-
Biopsy (punch, shave or incisional) for diagnosis
-
Cryotherapy (freezing) with liquid nitrogen
-
Prescription creams for non-surgical treatment
-
Surgical excision of skin lesions or cancers
-
Referral to specialist skin surgeons or dermatologists
