Dr Nilukshi Gunawardana is an internationally trained GP Registrar, bringing a strong background in emergency medicine and comprehensive patient care. She completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University in Sri Lanka, graduating in 2019, and undertook her internship at Colombo South Teaching Hospital, with rotations in Paediatrics and General Surgery.
Following her internship, Dr Gunawardana worked at a COVID Intermediate Care Centre at District Hospital Nawagamuwa, contributing to the care of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. She then progressed to an Emergency Department Medical Officer role at Base Hospital Walasmulla, where she worked from 2020 to 2023 in a low-resource setting. During this time, she gained extensive experience managing a wide range of acute medical and surgical presentations and developed strong clinical decision-making skills.
In October 2023, Dr Gunawardana relocated to Australia and commenced work as an Emergency Department Medical Officer at Nepean Hospital, where she continued to practise until January 2026. While at Nepean Hospital, she has also completed Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics rotations, further strengthening her skills in women’s health, child health, and family-centred care.
She is currently continuing her professional journey towards achieving Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) and is committed to ongoing professional development and evidence-based practice.
Her clinical interests include chronic disease management, women’s health, preventive medicine, and continuity of care across all stages of life.
