Contraception

Our GPs provide confidential, evidence-based contraception advice and prescriptions tailored to your health, lifestyle and future plans. Options we can discuss include the oral contraceptive pill, contraceptive injection, the contraceptive implant (Implanon NXT), intrauterine devices (IUDs) such as the Mirena hormonal IUD and copper IUD, condoms, and emergency contraception.

Mirena hormonal IUD

Mirena is a small T-shaped device placed inside the uterus by a trained GP. It releases a low dose of progesterone to prevent pregnancy and can also help reduce heavy periods. Once inserted, it provides long-acting, reversible contraception for up to 5 years. We offer:

  • Suitability assessment and counselling

  • Mirena insertion with local anaesthetic

  • Check-up (string check) and follow-up care

  • Removal and discussion of alternative options when needed

What to expect

Your GP will take a medical history, explain benefits and possible side effects, and help you choose the method that fits you best. If you decide on Mirena or another IUD, we’ll organise a dedicated insertion appointment and provide clear after-care advice. Medicare rebates may apply.

Book an appointment to talk through your options in a supportive, judgement-free setting.
