Dr Stephan Praet
MD, MSc, PhD, FEBSM, FACSEP
Dr Stephan Praet (MD, MSc, PhD, FEBSM, FACSEP) is a Consultant Sport & Exercise Physician with over 25 years of international clinical experience across Europe and Australia.
He holds specialist qualifications from both the Australasian College of Sport & Exercise Physicians (FACSEP) and the European Board of Sport Medicine (FEBSM), a PhD from Maastricht University, and an Adjunct Associate Professorship at the University of Canberra
Research Institute for Sport and Exercise (UCRISE). He is a former Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Physician (2015–2017) and a co-author of 40+ peer-reviewed publications.
Dr Praet has a particular interest in:
- Neural Prolotherapy (Lyftogt Perineural Injection Therapy / PIT) for chronic nerve and myofascial pain — one of the few practitioners in the ACT and Illawarra trained in the Lyftogt method
- Exercise medicine for chronic disease — type 2 diabetes, cancer rehabilitation, heart failure, long-COVID, and healthy ageing
- Sports & musculoskeletal injuries — tendinopathy, concussion assessment and return-to-sport, bone stress injuries
- Running medicine — gait assessment, load management, RED-S, marathon preparation
From 1 July 2025, Sport & Exercise Physicians are classified by Medicare as consultant physicians. Significantly higher Medicare rebates now apply with a valid GP referral.
As a former competitive 800m runner (PB 1:51.9), Dr Praet understands firsthand the urgency of returning to sport safely.
