Ear wax removal
Ear wax removal
Excessive or impacted ear wax affects nearly one in ten people causing hearing loss, pain, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), itching, discharge and other issues.
It can be caused by:
- Narrow, hairy or curved ear canals
- Wearing hearing aids, ear plugs or ear bud headphones
- Water sports or working in dusty environments
- Using cotton buds or other objects in the ear
At our clinic, registered nurses trained in gentle and effective microsuction ear wax removal provide this service. This dry technique, also used by Ear Nose & Throat specialists, is a safer alternative to syringing and is suitable even for people with perforated ear drums.
We only remove problematic wax – that is, wax that is occlusive, impacted, or causing symptoms. Wax that is not causing any issues does not generally need to be removed.
If you are under the care of an ENT specialist or have a history of complex ear conditions, please consult your doctor before booking. We are happy to see children under 12, provided they are able to comprehend, cooperate, and sit still during the procedure.
Preparing for your appointment:
If you do not have a perforated ear drum, using wax-softening drops 1–2 days before your appointment can help make the procedure easier. Products such as chemist-grade olive oil or over-the-counter softening drops are suitable. For best results, lie on your side for five minutes after applying the drops. If you do have a perforated ear drum, softening drops are not recommended.
