Dr Barrell attended Sydney University, graduating in 1984.

Following this, she went into General Practice from 1986, working in NSW, Tasmania and Queensland.

Mainly based in small regional towns, Dr Barrell also worked extensively as a locum GP from 2003 to 2017.

Now based in the Blue Mountains, her twin passions outside of work are history and music. In her spare time she enjoys historic dancing and costuming, bush dancing, playing the harp and the recorder, early and folk music and crafts.
