This is a more flexible training pathway, but it still features a comprehensive and structured education program developed and delivered by experienced Fellows of ACRRM. Participants work directly with ACRRM staff and medical educators to craft a training plan that suits their career goals, and they are able to facilitate both their own training placements and their learning experience. They are not restricted by Commonwealth funding requirements and policy.

  • A comprehensive and structured education program delivered online and face-to-face

Fully funded by government

Over 50 registrars across 40 Ochre Health practices participate in this program each term and it is a primary pathway for doctors wishing to pursue the speciality of general practice. From 2023, responsibility for delivering the AGPT Program lies with the RACGP under a profession-led, community-based model. This will bring GP training into line with other medical specialist training programs across the country.

  • First year – working and learning in a hospital setting including clinical rotations relevant to general practice.
  • Second and third years – general practice terms working in a clinic and seeing patients. The on-site training is complemented by structured study modules. Extended skills training options in the final six months include palliative care, sports medicine, sexual health and skin cancer medicine.
  • Fourth year (optional) – additional rural skills training (ARST) in preparation for RACGP Rural Generalist Fellowship.

Funded by government and administered by Ochre Health

We have administered and supported this program in Tasmania for a number of years. An initiative of the Department of Health, it is designed to encourage up-and-coming clinicians to take on a remote and rural career. The program provides 300 undergraduate medical students the opportunity to experience life and clinical practice in remote and rural locations. Successful applicants from 20 participating universities spend eight weeks over three to four years in rural and remote communities with a one-to-one professional mentor and a community host.
