Doctor Wanted: Escape the Grind & Practice Medicine in Paradise (Yes, Seriously)
Looking for a sea change and a tree change? How about dolphins and wallabies? Join a tight-knit, legendary team on Flinders Island—where your commute involves more coastline than concrete, and the locals genuinely want to shout you a coffee for being their GP.
About the Practice
Our well-established medical centre is the healthcare heartbeat of Flinders Island—the largest of the Furneaux Group of islands, floating peacefully between Tasmania and mainland Australia. We cover everything from coughs and colds to emergency care and inpatient services (with a view, of course). It’s a true Rural Generalist dream, backed by a passionate, supportive team.
Why Flinders Island?
Aside from having fewer traffic lights than your average garage band tour:
- Nature is your neighbour: Rugged granite peaks, white sand beaches, and zero crowds.
- Real community spirit: You’ll be known by name (and probably get fresh veggies from a grateful patient).
- Work-life balance: Surf in the morning, consult by lunch, hike after work. Repeat.
The Roster You’ve Been Dreaming About
Starting January 2026, we’re offering a 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off arrangement. That’s right—work half the year and still make a real impact (and income).
This flexible FIFO-style schedule is perfect for GPs who want to blend meaningful rural work with a seriously good lifestyle.
Perks That Pack a Punch
Flinders Island is part of Tasmania’s initiative to attract legends like you:
- $100K GP Incentive Package over 5 years—because you deserve it.
- Relocation assistance to get you and your gear across the Bass Strait.
- Accommodation support—so you’re not left Googling “island real estate panic.”
- GP NOW Rapid Response Team—ongoing rural GP support, not just a wave goodbye.
The Role
This isn’t just another GP job. You’ll be a local hero, delivering:
- Full-spectrum GP care
- Emergency and inpatient services (with great backup)
- Community health initiatives that actually make a difference
- Team-based care, with people who have your back
What We’re Looking For
- Vocational Registration (FRACGP or FACRRM) or eligibility for Rural Generalist training
- Some experience in emergency/inpatient care (we’re not asking for Grey’s Anatomy)
- Clear communicator with a love for community-focused care
- A team player who doesn’t mind the occasional house call where the dog might join the consult
