The opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced Rural GP (VMO) to join our team at Ochre Medical Centre Smithton and provide on-call services to the Smithton District Hospital.

You’ll be one of up to 7 GPs sharing the hospital roster, supported by a fantastic nursing team and visiting specialists. The hospital includes:

  • Midwifery clinic
  • X-ray facilities (with training provided if required)

This is a rewarding, hands-on role where you can really make a difference — while earning well and living well.

What’s on offer:

  • Excellent earning potential— combine GP and VMO billings
  • $2000 site visit grant for eligible applicants through the People Project
  • DPA/MMM5 location – moratorium reduction and access to financial incentives
  • RVTS & ACRRM Independent Pathway eligible
  • Procedural Grants and GPRIP payments apply
  • X-ray training provided
  • Relocation, car, and accommodation support
  • 1:4 to 1:6 VMO roster
  • Strong admin and clinical support, with RN-led CDM, immunisations, and women’s health
  • Regular visits from allied health and specialist services

Why Ochre Health?

We were founded by two rural GPs who wanted to build a better kind of medical group — one that understands the realities of rural practice and supports doctors to thrive. Today, Ochre supports over 450 doctors across Australia, including 90+ registrars, with practices in every corner of the country — from city hubs to remote outposts.

Why Smithton?

Smithton offers the kind of peaceful, community-based lifestyle that’s getting harder to find. Surrounded by farmland, forest, and the pristine waters of the Bass Strait, this is a place where you’ll know your neighbours, your patients, and your weekend fishing spots.

  • Affordable living in a welcoming community
  • Access to beaches, bushland, and national parks
  • Great for families, couples, or solo adventurers
  • An easy drive to Burnie, and flights to Hobart or Melbourne

You’ll need:

  • General or Vocational Registration with AHPRA
  • ALS2 / REST or equivalent emergency medicine certificate
  • Confidence managing common ED presentations
  • Recent experience working in an unsupervised emergency setting
