Insights into gender paygap amongst GPs

 

This report has been done to assist in providing a better understanding of what drives gender pay gaps in general practice. We have also provided hourly earnings data by rurality, international medical graduates and doctor age.

What we found in 2024 was that on average for every $1 earned by a male GP, the earnings of a female GP averaged 93 cents. This is a 7% reduction in hourly earnings.

Medicare payments in Australia have been designed to remunerate shorter consultations at a higher rate than longer consultations. The findings at Ochre Health suggests that this factor drives the gender pay gap more than any other.
