Dr Byrne graduated from his medical studies in 1979 at the University of Queensland, and has worked extensively both in Australia and the UK.

He completed his fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 1996.

Dr Byrne has interests in general medicine, the care of the elderly and palliative care. He was an examiner for the fellowship exam and is now heavily involved in undergraduate medical student general practice education.
