Dr Akurugoda completed his medical studies at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 2008. He then worked throughout the public and private hospital systems in Sri Lanka and Singapore.

He found three years working in the rural Sri Lankan community of Ampara an inspiring and formative period of his career, during which he had the ability to positively impact the quality of life of a rural population.

Arriving in Australia in 2016, Dr Akurugoda worked in the emergency, intensive care and paediatric departments at Campbelltown Hospital, Camden Hospital and Bowral Hospital in New South Wales’ Southern Highlands. He began practicing with Ochre Health team at Barham in May 2019 as an Independent Pathway GP registrar with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) together with his wife Anusha.

Dr Akurugoda enjoys family time with Anusha and their son Yehan and pursuing his love of playing cricket with Barham Koondrook Cricket Club.
