Dr Pickavance undertook his medical degree in St Andrews, Scotland, and Manchester, England. Following 4 1/2 years working in hospitals in England he moved to work in rural medical practice at Pyramid Hill in the Mallee for 18 months, Winchelsea, and subsequently in Maryborough Victoria for 15 years before relocating to Ballarat.

His clinical interests include family medicine, preventive health/screening, fitness, chronic disease management, weight management, diabetes and asthma.

As a Senior Lecturer for Deakin Medical School he is engaged in teaching the next generation of doctors.

Outside of work he enjoys various sports, reading extensively, and music.
