Dr Mahalekshmi Selvanathan was born in Malaysia, and went on to attain her medical degree at Kursk State Medical University in Russia, graduating in 2009. She returned to Malaysia, where she completed her internship at a busy rural hospital and began training in emergency medicine. Following this, she has worked in a variety of locations in both emergency and general practice, including being one of four emergency doctors constituting the rapid assessment team to the Gorha earthquake relief in Nepal. Before moving to Armidale, she was also co-director of the preventive program initiative with the National Cancer Research Foundation of South Australia.
Dr Selvanathan has worked in Armidale since 2015 and began practicing with the practice in February 2021. She has pursued a number of post-graduate certifications, including the FPAA National Certificate from Family Planning NSW, a Professional Diploma in Dermatology, and an Advanced Certificate in Women’s Health. She has a strong background in sexual health and family planning, providing contraception and safe sex advice to schools and communities. She is also qualified to provide Implanon or Mirena contraceptives and is a provider with Family Planning NSW’s Condom Credit Card Program and a provider of PrEP.
Outside of work, Dr Selvanathan is a happily married animal lover. Her interests include acrylic painting, cooking, baking, and she is an avid reader.
